Annual Lighting of the Christmas TreeThe Annual Lighting of the Christmas Tree is a long standing tradition in the north east inner city. It is an event held in memory of all those who have died from drug related causes.Unfortunately, due to Covid-19 restrictions the lighting of the tree could not be held in our usual way, in person and is instead being posted in video format across our social media. Staying true to the original format, people continued to hang stars, photos, written memories and other tributes onto the tree in commemoration of their loved ones who have died from drug related causes. We extend our support to all those struggling at this time.
The Annual Lighting of the Christmas Tree 2020 is also dedicated to Fergus McCabe, one of the foremost activists and spokespeople for community drug organisations for over 30 years. Fergus played a major role in setting up addiction services and supports in the north east inner city and beyond and, it is therefore fitting that we pay our respects to him at this time.
A special thank you to the McCabe family for taking time to mark this occasion with us; to Poppy and Eoin for lighting the tree and to Ella and Cara for laying the wreath. This event is held in collaboration with the North Inner City Drugs and Alcohol Task Force and Dublin City Council; to which their ongoing support in the community is greatly appreciated. To all of us at ICON,Happy Christmas. We look forward to marking this event with you all in person next year
